How To Make Delicious Veg Momos At Home

Veg momos are steamed dumplings filled with spicy vegetable mixture of your choice. This Indo Chinese dish is very famous street food in India and especially enjoyed by kids.
Ingredients: 1 cup All Purpose Flour (aka Maida) 1 ½ cup Cabbage (shredded) ¼ cup Carrots (shredded) 1 tbsp Cooking Oil ¼ cup Green Beans (finely chopped) 1 tbsp Garlic (finely chopped) 1 tsp Ginger Paste ¼ tsp Black Pepper Powder 1 tsp Vinegar 1 tsp Soya Sauce Salt (according to taste) Instructions: 1. First of all lets knead the dough for momos, for this take all purpose flour then add salt, 1 tsp oil and mix all ingredients well. Then add water little by little to knead dough with the right consistency. We want dough consistency to be medium soft just like chapatti dough. Once done with kneading, cover it and keep it aside for 20-25 mins to let it set. 2. Meanwhile, let’s start cooking vegetable filling for momos. For this take a pan on medium heat and add oil, when oil become little hot add garlic, ginger and sauté for 30 sec on medium heat. 3. Now add chopped beans and sauté again but its optional to add beans. After that add shredded carrots, cabbage, salt, black pepper powder, vinegar, soya sauce and mix all ingredients well and cook on medium heat for 2 mins while continuously stirring. Be careful not to cook them completely as they will also be cooked while steaming momos. 4. After 2 mins switch off the heat, cover it and let it sit for 5-6 mins. Now move all filling to a bowl and let it cool down. 5. After 25 mins again knead the dough to get right smoothness. Now let’s make dough balls for momos, I will show you two ways to make momos. 6. First one is you make small ball of this size and roll them one by one. Second method is to make a bigger ball and then you make 2-3 momos coverings at once using a bowl. 7.Once dough balls are done, let’s go to next step to start making the momos. Just keep in mind veg mixture should be cooled down before filling it in coverings. 8. Now to roll out dough balls apply some oil on surface where you will roll them, now take a ball and roll into 3 inch diameter disk and make sure to keep the edges thin. Now take around 1 tbsp of filling and place in center, don’t overfill otherwise it will be difficult to close it. 9. Now let’s see how to close the momos. First grab edges of covering with both hands like this, then fold it and press it, similarly keep folding and pressing. In the end close the sealing completely by pressing like this. This is how it looks like after closing. 10.Now take a greased plate to place momos so that they don’t stick to plate and cover them with a wet cloth to avoid them getting dry. 11. Now let’s see second method, this is specially useful for anyone who has difficulty rolling a round disk. For this take a slightly bigger dough ball and roll it into around 6-7 inches disc like this. 12.Now take a 3 inch diameter bowl and press it on covering to cut round discs like this and remove any extra dough. This is how it looks after cutting, just thin out the edges before filling them. Now fill them and fold as we did before and keep them covered. 13. Once all momos are filled let’s see how to steam them. To steam them you can use a special momos steamer if you have one but I am making them in an idli stand. For this take a big enough pot with a lid where idli stand can easily fit. If you don’t have a big pan you can also use a pressure cooker to steam them. 9. Now apply oil on all idli plates before placing momos in it, afterwards place this plate in the stand. Now place momos in idli plates but I am leaving lowest plate empty so that water does not touch momos while steaming. Now put second plate over it, just make sure this plate does not touch the momos otherwise they will stick to the plate above. Similarly, fill all plates with momos. 10. Now put the pot on gas and add around 1 cup of water. We are only adding enough water so that water does not touch momos. Now let water gets a boil on high heat. When water starts boiling place idli stand in pot, cover the pan and let momos steam on high heat for 8-10 mins. 11. After 10 mins, switch of the heat and let steam settle down for 5-10 mins before taking momos out. 12. After 10 mins momos are ready to taste, so take them out in a plate and serve them with spicy red chilli sauce.
